EDINBURGH BRANCH POLICY AND PROSECCO TALKS
Last year’s Aspects of Independence talks were so popular, that this year the
Edinburgh Branch is offering a Policy and Prosecco series, widening the scope
to cover many topical issues. To kick off 2013, Andrew Wilson, the journalist
and former SNP MSP, spoke on Transforming the culture of Scottish politics and
pursuing excellence in national performance. The second talk was given by Professor Alan Miller. Professor Miller is the Chair
of the Scottish Human Rights Commission and has over 25 years involvement
in the field of human rights. He previously ran a law practice in Castlemilk, is a
past president of the Glasgow Bar Association and is a former director of Scottish
Human Rights Centre. He spoke about Human Rights in Scotland.
A list of speakers in the Aspects of Independence series can be
found here.

RECENT EVENTS
The International Schools’ Mace and the John Smith Memorial Mace, Saturday 20th April 2013
Both the ESU's International Schools Mace final and the International Final of the (University)
John Smith Memorial Mace were held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh on Saturday 20th April.
In a closely fought schools’ final on Saturday afternoon, Dulwich College (the England winners)
edged out George Heriot’s (the Scotland winners) to win the International Schools Mace.
In the John Smith Memorial Mace final held later on Saturday, the Irish winners, Trinity
College Dublin, beat the Scottish, English and Welsh winners (St Andrews University,
Kaplan Law School and Aberystwyth University respectively) to win the International
Mace in another very close final. We were delighted that Baroness Elizabeth Smith was able to attend the university final, which
is named after her late husband John, and she thoroughly enjoyed the event.
The event was a real team effort from ESU
staff in Dartmouth House and ESU Scotland, and it was great to work together on this. These finals are the culmination of major debating competitions across the UK and Ireland
at school and university level and of course a huge amount of work has gone into the rounds
of these competitions to get them to the International Finals. Thanks must also go to all who
made this possible.
