Monthly Creative Writing Group
The ESU Creative Writing Group meets on the first Thursday of every month to discuss different aspects of creative writing, and to write. If you are interested in joining then you would be very welcome. More details can be found on the Creative Writing Group page, but do contact the office if you would like to know more.

Atholl Crescent Debating Society
The Atholl Crescent Debating Society is for anyone who has an interest in the world around us. It meets every two months or so to debate a wide range of issues, from bringing back the stocks to punish breaches of ASBOS to the situation in the Middle East. If you would like to come along and watch or join in then we'd be delighted. The debates are always lively and well-attended and are followed by a glass of wine and a chat. For more details of the Atholl Crescent Debating Society see the separate page on this website and for upcoming debates, please see the News & Events section.

Edinburgh Branch Lunch Programme
The Edinburgh Branch organises a monthly lunch with a speaker during the winter months. It takes place at the Overseas League, 100 Princes Street. These lunches are a great opportunity to meet other members whilst listening to some truly fascinating speakers. The lunches cost £12.50 for a two course lunch with coffee and mints. Please contact the office if you would like to attend. For a full programme of the lunches, please download the Edinburgh Branch Lunch Programme
12.30-2.30pm, The Royal Overseas League, 100 Princes Street, Edinburgh

Annual Burns Supper
Every year we hold an annual Burns Supper around Burns Night (25th January). It is always an entertaining evening with a three course dinner of cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, neeps and tatties, and cheese and oatcakes, after which there are traditional speeches and recitations of the Bard's works. It is always well-attended so do get in touch nearer the time if you would like to join in the fun.
Around 25th January, 23 Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh

The Call Memorial Service
The annual ESU Scottish American Memorial Day Service takes place every year on the last Monday of May at "The Call" monument in West Princes Street Gardens. The monument was erected in 1927 after more than $50,000 had been raised by Americans, many of Scots descent, who wished to commemorate the sacrifice made by Scots during World War I. The monument was designed by the Canadian sculptor Robert Tait McKenzie. The ESU was involved in the planning of this memorial, and was represented at the first annual service to be held at "The Call" in 1932. It continues to serve as a timely reminder of the close ties between this country and the United States of America, in peace and war. In 2009 the event was filmed for the first time and details can be found here.
12 noon, last Monday in May, "The Call", West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh

We do hold additional Membership events throughout the year. Please do look at the News & Events page for details of upcoming events.
