Throughout the year, the ESU runs a number of debating and public
speaking tournaments. As well as this, it delivers Debates Outreach
Projects.
In doing this, the ESU relies upon a cohort of volunteer judges and
paid mentors to deliver these tournaments.
If you are interested in judging a tournament (Juniors, Schools Mace,
Public Speaking or Universities Mace) or take become a trained ESU
mentor please do get in touch with Rob Marrs.
If you are new to debating and would like to learn more about judging,
we run occasional judging seminars. Please contact the ESU for further
details.
ESU Debates Outreach Mentors Needed
ESU Scotland has run 5 Debates Outreach Projects with local authorities
across Scotland (Stirling, West Lothian, City of Aberdeen &
North Lanarkshire - twice). We are now delighted to confirm that we
will be running a further Project in Falkirk the spring of 2008.
The programmes involve all the schools in a local authority taking part
in a Debates Workshop Day & a Finals Day. At the Workshop, over
the course of the day, University Mentors take a group of children and
take them through the basics of debating and play debates related
games. This culminates in the group taking part in a debate in front of
all the other groups. Each Mentor is given full training by ESU
Scotland.
The programme helps promote debating in schools that do not have a
debating tradition and helps promote advocacy & communication
skills, critical thinking, and engagement with current affairs to the
children involved. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response.
University Mentors are paid £40 per day plus travel expenses
for each debate training day they do. All mentors need to be trained at
a Mentor Training Day – we are going to host a training day
at 23 Atholl Crescent on the afternoon of February 24th at 1pm. Mentors
will be paid £25 for attending the finals day.
Each mentor will receive £25 for attending the training day
once they have taken part in a Workshop Day. We will also cover
reasonable travel expenses.
The key dates for the Falkirk project are as follows:
The Training Day is due to take place on 24th February.
The Pupil Workshop is due to take place on 10th and 14th March
The Finals Day is due to take place on 31st March
If you are an experienced mentor or have never mentored before, please
do get in touch with Rob Marrs for further information about the project.
