In 2006, the Scottish Government agreed to support our work to foster
Scottish Schools debating to the tune of £25,000. It was
decided, after discussions with The Scottish Government and Learning
& Teaching Scotland, that the best way to use this in the
promotion of schools debating in Scotland was to develop definitive
resources for teachers and pupils to promote the use of debate in the
classroom and as an extra-curricular activity.
These resources were published in September 2007 and were
launched at a reception in the Scottish Parliament on September 6th.
The materials can be found at
www.ltscotland.org.uk/debatinginschools.
We are pleased to announce that in February 2008, LTS have agreed to continue
funding for a 2nd Phase of the Debating In Schools project –
this will involve extending the website materials and develop a Train
The Trainer model. These developments are hugely exciting for ESU
Scotland - and should put debating at the heart of the
Scottish curriculum.
We are grateful to the Scottish Government for their imaginative
recognition of the important part debating can play in improving the
life changes of young Scots, and for their endorsement of our work to
date.
If you would like to learn more about these exciting resources, please
