We at ESU Scotland were very excited at being given the opportunity to host the last World Members’ Conference in Edinburgh in September 2008. Over 250 delegates from 31 countries attended.

The ESU is the premier provider of training and activities in speech
and debate for young people in Scotland.
We believe that the ability to communicate effectively is arguably the
most valuable skill a person can possess. Without this we are
unable to co-operate with other people, or influence the environment in
which we live. ESU Scotland is totally dedicated to spreading
these skills as widely as possible, to promoting excellence in the arts
of speaking and debating, and to giving all Scotland’s young
people access to the massive benefits that these activities bring.
We do this by organising Debating Competition for
schools; and by working with local authorities to deliver Outreach
Projects to schools that have not traditionally offered
speech and debate activities to their pupils.
We were recently commissioned by the Scottish Government to write
Debates Materials for the Scottish teaching profession;
while we offer tailored Workshops & Coaching sessions to pupils and staff at both individual school and local
authority level.
As well as our work with schools, we organise the Scottish end of the
John Smith Memorial Mace, the most prestigious
intervarsity debating competition in the UK and Ireland. For
adults we also run the Atholl Crescent Debating Society which meets monthly to debate matters of topical, ethical and political
concern.
